- Do you use your computer for business as well as pleasure? Then
- PC-TimeClock can save you money at tax time!
-
- PC-TimeClock is a Windows program that keeps track of time you've spent on
- your computer. Time is charged to one or more "projects" from your list by
- "punching in" when you begin work on each project. In addition, projects
- may be grouped into different "categories" (e.g. business and pleasure)
- that you choose. To give one example, this will greatly simplify your
- computation of the percentage of time your computer was used for business
- purposes, and thus the percentage of its value that you can depreciate or
- deduct as a business expense on your taxes.
-
- The reporting program summarizes usage by both project and category, giving
- hours and percentage of time spent in each. If you categorize your
- projects as business and non-business, the bottom line is the figure that
- you need for IRS Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization, lines 23c and
- 24c. In addition, you can answer "Yes" on line 22b which asks whether you
- have written evidence to support the claimed business use: this may reduce
- the chances that your return will be selected for audit. [The line numbers
- were from 1993 tax forms, and may differ in other years.]
-
- There are other time manager programs, but PC-TimeClock is simple (simple
- enough that you might actually use it), it does the job, and is less
- expensive than the others.
